Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski kicked off his visit to the US on Thursday, highlighting how the partnership between Russia and Iran in making and launching drones is something that impacts Europe and the whole world. This comes after wreckage from an Iranian drone shot down in Ukraine was brought to the US.
Sikorski’s trip primarily aims to participate in a Security Council session and the UN General Assembly. He’s set to meet with Secretary of State Marco Rubio while he’s there.
The Wall Street Journal mentioned that, at the request of the non-profit group United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI), Sikorski helped deliver an Iranian Shahed drone to the US Russia is using this drone in Ukraine and Iran in the Middle East, and it’s going to be showcased at the CPAC conference happening this weekend in Washington.
During a quick press event in Washington, Sikorski pointed out that the collaboration between Russia and Iran in producing and launching these drones is a big issue for Europe and the world. He noted that a drone of the same kind hit the Chernobyl power plant last week. Some US officials have already checked it out.
The Shahed drone, known as Geran-2 by the Russians, is raising eyebrows among US security experts since it’s cheap to make yet can cause severe damage. Back in January 2024, a Shahed launched by Iranian Shiite militias killed four American soldiers when it hit their position in Jordan.
