Head of Polish diplomacy Radosław Sikorski has met with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and her accompanying delegation on 8 January.
Minister Sikorski emphasised Poland’s commitment to supporting civil society in Belarus. He applauded the activities of the Belarusian democratic opposition in exile and expressed support for the country’s democratic and European aspirations.
The meeting proved an opportunity for underscoring Poland’s objection to policies pursued by the Minsk authorities, which since the rigged presidential election of August 2020 have continued to stamp out all symptoms of independence, with repression targeting the regime’s political opponents at an unprecedented scale.
Poland has continuously called on Belarusian decision-makers to release all political prisoners, including Andrzej Poczobut, held in custody since March 2021, and stop the repression of Belarusian society.
“In today’s warm meeting with FM @sikorskiradek, I proposed that Poland submit an #ICC case against Lukashenka for crimes against Belarusians & the deportation of children. We also discussed visa support for Belarusians, closing sanction loopholes & #Belarus‘ European future,” posted Tsikhanouskaya on X.
