Bulgaria, Turkey, Romania and Ukraine are taking part in a European Union-funded project aimed to increase the dolphin population in the Black Sea.
As reported by the Sofia News Agency (Novinite), Black Sea dolphins are not sufficiently protected, despite a 1983 ban. It is estimated that 4-5 million dolphins have been caught in the Black Sea in the 20th century.
Pollution, epidemics and food shortages due to large-scale fishing are also factors contributing to the dolphin population decline.
The project, worth €500,000 is funded by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment.
