The S&D Group protests against the latest tweet by U.S. president Donald Trump promising the recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
“President Trump continues his irresponsible manipulations in the Middle East. After having moved the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, now he proposes to recognise Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights. With this, yet again, he breaks international consensus and goes against international law. The re-drawing of state borders through military occupation and annexation is over, and is unacceptable in the 21st century. All this for helping out his friend and ally Benyamin Netanyahou in the ongoing electoral campaign in Israel, and in the middle of criminal investigations against him for bribery and other charges,” said S&D Group vice-president for foreign affairs, Elena Valenciano.
“We are still waiting for Mr Trump’s peace plan he announced a long time ago. But in the light of his decisions and announcements, which are destroying his credibility as an honest broker, we already know what to expect. The European Union and its member states must stick to the international consensus and to international law, and should start playing a genuine political role in peace efforts,” Valenciano added.
