On 11-12 March, 2024, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, workshop series on gender-sensitive communication were held for government officials and representatives of public organisations of Turkmenistan in Turkmenabad city.
This event was a joint effort of the European Union Delegation to Turkmenistan, the Border Management Assistance Program in Central Asia (BOMCA 10) and the Office of the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan.
The workshop series brought together representatives of the Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Customs Service, the Mayor’s office, local government bodies of Lebap region, as well as representatives of “Yenme” and “Beyyik Eyyam” public organisations.
The main goal of the two-day workshop with training elements was to familiarise participants with the concepts of gender-sensitive communication and provide them with practical skills applicable to their communication work with local communities.
The seminar covered such topics as “Fundamentals of Communication”, “Features and characteristics of working with the target audience”, “Emotional intelligence”, “Understanding gender and communication”, “Practical strategies for gender-sensitive communication”.
In her opening speech, Ms. Beata Peksa, Ambassador of the European Union in Turkmenistan, congratulated the participants on this important event and emphasized the following: “Language is a powerful tool that shapes our understanding and interpretation of the world around us. By using gender-sensitive language in all our communications, we contribute to combating gender stereotypes. This is especially important for employees who work directly with the public.“
