On January 16, 2025, Suomen Voima, a Finish power generating company, and Statkraft signed a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) that will take effect in January 2025. The contract is expected to cover an annual volume of 100 GWh generated by the Nedre Bjurfors hydropower plant and the Björkhöjden wind farm. Both facilities are located in the Swedish bidding area SE2, marking this deal as Suomen Voima’s first venture in Sweden.
“We are pleased to have concluded this PPA hedging contract with Suomen Voima and are looking forward to 15 years of cooperation”, says Ketil Hovland, Senior Originator of Statkraft AS.
This PPA, which combines two different energy production technologies, enhances and diversifies Suomen Voima’s energy portfolio by increasing its versatility and geographical reach.
The Nedre Bjurfors hydropower plant has been in operation since 1959 and currently has a capacity of 78 MW. The plant features three turbines with a gross head of 20 meters, producing approximately 400 GWh annually. Suomen Voima’s portion of this annual production is around 50 GWh, half of the contracted volume in the PPA. The other half of the PPA’s volume will come from the Björkhöjden wind farm.
The Björkhöjden wind farm began operations in 2015 and consists of 90 Siemens wind turbines, each with a capacity of 3.2 MW, totalling an installed capacity of 288 MW, resulting in an annual production of 700 GWh.
“We’d like to thank Statkraft for the enjoyable and productive collaboration. As a result, we have enhanced our geographical diversification in the Nordics by securing our first deal in Sweden, which seamlessly integrates with our existing operations in the Finnish and Norwegian price zones,” highlighted Pekka Saijonmaa, CEO of Suomen Voima.
