The Netherlands aims to improve the practicality and effectiveness of sanctions by enhancing compliance and enforcement at national and European levels. To achieve this, Minister of Foreign Affairs Caspar Veldkamp will host a conference on 15 January 2025, bringing together policymakers, legal experts, financial institutions, and business representatives to discuss effective sanctions enforcement.

Sanctions are crucial for holding countries, organisations, and individuals accountable, such as those imposed on Russia to hinder its aggression against Ukraine. The success of these measures relies on effective compliance, making ongoing monitoring essential.

The conference will provide a platform for information exchange and collaboration among member states to address new attempts at sanctions evasion. It will feature a keynote speech from Minister Veldkamp and presentations by officials, including Vladyslav Vlasiuk, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s special adviser, EU sanctions envoy David O’Sullivan, Finnish foreign minister Elina Valtonen, and Latvian foreign minister Baiba Braže.

An exhibition organised by NAKO, a Ukrainian anti-corruption organisation, will showcase items used in the war, including Western components, underscoring ongoing compliance challenges.
