New technologies provoked collateral damages. Journalists are the first victims of the uncontrolled use of the internet and the violation of copyright.
Hundreds of media have closed during the last years sending more than 15 thousand journalists at home since the loss of revenue for the media is counted in billions.
Now more than 200 European organizations of journalists, writers, publishers, booksellers, composers and artists call on the European Parliament to save the free press by voting #Yes2Copyright.
According to their call MEPs vote will help independent journalism in the digital age.
“We, the undersigned organisations, representing authors, composers, writers, journalists, performers and others working in all artistic fields, news agencies, book, press and music publishers, audiovisual and independent music producers call on the European Parliament to adopt the Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market.
This Directive has been long sought to create a much-needed level playing field for all actors of the creative sector in the European Digital Single Market, whilst giving citizens better access to a wider array of content.
This is a historical opportunity. We need an internet that is fair and sustainable for all. This is why we urge policymakers to adopt the Directive quickly, as agreed in trilogue negotiations”
According to the French Professor Christophe Caron the Publisher’s Right will safeguard pluralism, media, newspapers, and therefore democracy since shrinking revenues have led to major job losses and closures among publishers big and small across Europe.
