The general election in Spain yesterday was a clear victory for the Spanish Socialist Worker’s Party (PSOE) with 28.7% of the vote and 123 seats in the lower house and absolute majority in the Senate.
“I congratulate Pedro Sánchez and our sister party PSOE on this decisive victory. It reflects a recognition of the achievements of the Socialist government over the past ten months: A clearly pro-European government with a vision for a strong and progressive European Union,” said S&D Group President Udo Bullmann.
“Spanish people have voted for stability and moderation, against fear and against the extreme-right’s call for a regression to the past. They have voted for a better future, and for sustainable policies promoting freedom, equality and justice. We are looking forward to working with the new government that Pedro Sánchez will lead. Our friends in Spain will give new impetus to Europe as such. Together with Spain we are ready to build a sustainable and fair Europe,” concluded Bullmann.
